To accommodate this population, several researchers have used technologies originally developed for mobile robots to create “smart wheelchairs” that reduce the physical, perceptual, and cognitive skills necessary to operate a power wheelchair. We are developing a Smart Wheelchair Component System (SWCS) that can be added to a variety of commercial power wheelchairs with minimal modification. This paper describes the design of a prototype of the SWCS, which has been evaluated on wheelchairs from four different manufacturers.

During fiscal years 2000 and 2001, the Veterans Health Administration provided veterans with more than 131,000 medicare power wheelchairs and handicap scooters at a cost of $109 million. This national study is the first to investigate Veterans Health Administration costs in providing wheelchairs and scooters and to compare regional prescription patterns. With a retrospective design, we used descriptive methods to analyze fiscal years 2000 and 2001 National Prosthetics Patient Database data (cleaned data set of 113,724 records). Wheelchairs were categorized by function, weight, and adjustability options for meeting individual needs (e.g., axle position, camber, position of wheels, tilt, and recline options). Results displayed a cost distribution that was negatively skewed by low-cost accessories coded as wheelchairs. Of the standard manual wheelchairs, 3.5% could be considered beyond the customary cost. Regionally, 71% to 86% of all wheelchairs provided were manual wheelchairs, 5% to 11% were power wheelchairs, and 5% to 20% were scooters. The considerable variation found in the types of wheelchairs and scooters provided across Veterans Integrated Service Networks may indicate a need for evidence-based prescription guidelines and clinician training in wheeled-mobility technologies

DESIGN: Convenience sample survey. SETTING: Thirteen Model Spinal Cord Injury Systems that provide comprehensive rehabilitation for people with traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) and that are part of the national database funded through the US Department of Education. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 412 people with SCI who use wheelchairs over 40 hours a week. INTERVENTION: Survey information was obtained from subjects via telephone and in-person interviews and from the national database. Collected information included age, race, education, level of injury, and wheelchair funding source. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Number and type (manual or power) of wheelchairs. Wheelchair customizability as defined by design features (eg, adjustable axle position, programmable controls). RESULTS: Ninety-seven percent of manual wheelchair users and 54% of power wheelchairs users had customizable wheelchairs. No power wheelchair user received a wheelchair without programmable controls. Minorities with low socioeconomic backgrounds (low income, Medicaid/Medicare recipients, less educated) were more likely to have standard manual and standard programmable power wheelchairs. Older subjects were also more likely to have standard programmable power wheelchairs and handicap scooters. CONCLUSIONS: The standard of care for manual wheelchair users with SCI is a lightweight and customizable wheelchair. The standard of care for power wheelchairs users has programmable controls. Unfortunately, socioeconomically disadvantaged people were less likely to receive customizable wheelchairs.

We as a society, as a city, step into success. We do something to alleviate that pressure. We can learn to apply that concept in our life. Instead of taking a look at the pressure as a bad thing we can use it to build something new, a bridge to our future. Do we do what Tommy Lasorda said-misuse that word ‘pressure’ and think of it as ‘oh, I’m going to fail, I’m going to fail’ and then give up? - or do we CHOOSE to do something different and step into our own success?
We all have habits. What is your ‘it’? What is the ‘it’ that stops you? When you start to feel that pressure, what do you do? Next time that happens, I want you to stop and think, ‘what am I automatically doing here’? Then decide to do something different in order to get a different result.
When I was first introduced to this concept, I did not recognize what habit I fell into until I was all the way in it. Stress eating was one of the things I used to do. As I learn to recognize where that pressure point is, what my habit is, what my ‘it’ is, I, can learn how to change it, how to react differently.
I just watched the movie ‘What the Bleep?! - Down the Rabbit Hole’. One of the concepts in the movie is that we, as human beings, are bombarded every second with 400 billion bits of information. We only process 2000, therefore we need to choose carefully which bits we pay attention too. When we succumb to the pressure and fall into a negative habit, like I used to when I was stress eating, we are selecting only a narrow negative portion of information from the 4 billion bits..
I have decided that I am going to choose a different 2,000 bits of information. It really is just a choice.. We need to recognize what our habits, and that we can change our habits. Millions of people have learned how to stop the stress eating habit. Millions of people have learned how to quit smoking. Millions and millions of people have learned how to make their life and Starscapes.com business opportunity better, how to step into success. If they can do it, I can do it. If I can do it, you can do it. It’s all just a simple choice, to make a different decision.
If you are a parent ask yourself, if you choose non-success habits, what are the habits and passions that you are creating in your children? But they have never failed to imitate them”. by James Baldwin. Even if you aren’t a parent what about the influence you have on the people around you?
We need to learn to recognize when we are backing off from pressure, when we are moving into the habits that are not success habits (the ones that we need to change). We also need to recognize the habits that we have that are good, that are leading us towards success, leading us to our financial freedom. We need to be aware so that we can make changes in our negative habits and reinforce our positive habits.
We need to learn to recognize that when we wish for something, ask for something, pray for something or when we say affirmations for something, it’s not going to just happen. It’s not going to be handed to us on a silver platter. One of my affirmations is “I am building a team of dream achievers” Now, I know that that is going to take patience and perseverance and that this whole team of dream achievers are not just going to be dumped in my lap. I have to go looking for them and attract them into my life.
As I go down the personal development journey and build my home business I come up against pressure points all the time. When I think back to the pressure points in my life last year at this time versus this year - whoa! - last year’s ones seem really simple now. What happens? We are not given exactly what we want right off the bat. But we are given the opportunity to develop the skills so that we get better. On my journey, I am becoming a better team leader. I am practicing my patience and my perseverance in my own learning so that I become that better learner that attracts, using the Law of Cause and Effect, that team of dream achievers, the team of business builders.
When that pressure is applied in our lives, patience and perseverance, is what we need in order to grow through that pressure point. Once we do grow and find different habits to allow us to get past that pressure point, to allow us to develop the skills, to learn those new things that we need to learn, we come to a better place and we can handle more pressure. We have new skills. We know something different. We react in a different away. We remain patient. We practice the perseverance and can step into success.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether a selection of low-cost, nonprogrammable electric-medicare power wheelchairs (EPWs) and medical scooters meets the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) Wheelchair Standards requirements. DESIGN: Objective comparison tests of various aspects of power wheelchair design and performance of 4 EPW types. SPECIMENS: Three of each of the following EPWs: Pride Mobility Jet 10 (Pride), Invacare Pronto M50 (Invacare), Electric Mobility Rascal 250PC (Electric Mobility), and the Golden Technologies Alant GP-201-F (Golden). SETTING: Rehabilitation engineering research center. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Static tipping angle; dynamic tipping score; braking distance; energy consumption; climatic conditioning; power and control systems integrity and safety; and static, impact, and fatigue life (equivalent cycles). RESULTS: Static tipping angle and dynamic tipping score were significantly different across manufacturers for each tipping direction (range, 6.6 degrees-35.6 degrees). Braking distances were significantly different across manufacturers (range, 7.4-117.3 cm). Significant differences among groups were found with analysis of variance (ANOVA). Energy consumption results show that all EPWs can travel over 17 km before the battery is expected to be exhausted under idealized conditions (range, 18.2-32.0 km). Significant differences among groups were found with ANOVA. All EPWs passed the climatic conditioning tests. Several adverse responses were found during the power and control systems testing, including motors smoking during the stalling condition (Electric Mobility), charger safety issues (Electric Mobility, Invacare), and controller failures (Golden). All EPWs passed static and impact testing; 9 of 12 failed fatigue testing (3 Invacare, 3 Golden, 1 Electric Mobility, 2 Pride). Equivalent cycles did not differ statistically across manufacturers (range, 9759-824,628 cycles). CONCLUSIONS: Large variability in the results, especially with respect to static tipping, power and control system failures, and fatigue life suggest design improvements must be made to make these low-cost, nonprogrammable EPWs safe and reliable for the consumer. Based on our results, these EPWs do not, in general, meet the ANSI/RESNA Wheelchair Standards requirements.

METHOD: In the first phase of the study, presented here, 18 in-depth, qualitative interviews were conducted with a variety of stakeholders, including power mobility users, other residents, staff and family members. RESULTS: A thematic analysis of the interviews revealed four main themes: 1) the meaning of power mobility, 2) learning the rules of the road, 3) red flags: concerns about safety, and 4) solutions.
