The brain-driven interface is described as a probabilistic relationship between neural activity and components of a prosthetic device that may take on discrete or continuous values. A new estimation procedure is developed for action potentials, and a corresponding procedure is described for field potentials and optical measurements. We test our framework against dominant approaches in an arm reaching task using simulated traces of ensemble spiking activity from primary motor cortex (MI) and a power wheelchairs navigation task using simulated traces of EEG-band power. Adaptive filtering is incorporated to demonstrate performance under neuron death and discovery. Finally, we characterize performance under model misspecification using physiologically realistic history dependence in MI spiking. These simulated results predict that the unified framework outperforms previous approaches under various conditions, in the control of position and velocity, based on trajectory and endpoint mean squared errors.

An individual with FSHMD was tested for change in heart rate (HR), rate of perceived exertion (RPE), propulsion speed (PS), time to completion (TC), and qualitative observation in a community-based environment. A modified Physiological Cost Index (mPCI) was calculated post hoc. Results indicate HR and mPCI for the PAPAW trials were lower; RPE was “Hard” for manual wheelchair propulsion and “Fairly or Very Light” for the PAPAW trials; PS was twice as fast in both conditions using the PAPAW; and TC was 53% faster with PAPAW than in the manual wheelchair. Qualitatively, the manual propulsion conditions had exaggerated trunk and hip flexion with simultaneous scapula elevation and upward rotation to initiate downward force on the hand rim more so than the PAPAW conditions. The data suggest that propulsion of a power wheelchairs enhanced by PAPAW is more energy efficient, biomechanically advantageous, and more timesaving than a manual wheelchair for the tested individual with FSHMD in his environment.

METHOD: Eight women and nine men aged between 60 and 81 (mean 69) years were recruited through a specialist wheelchair service database. All had severe mobility disabilities. Analysis was performed using a qualitative framework approach. RESULTS: Participants reported a variety of EPIOC uses, including shopping and some social contact. Moderate satisfaction with the chair was reported. Use was compromised by indoor and outdoor environmental barriers; and the chair not meeting users’ needs. Accidents were rare, but many users still experienced insecurity in the chair. High levels of satisfaction with the service were reported, although concern was expressed over length of waiting times. CONCLUSIONS: EPIOCs proved useful to most older people with disabilities. However, even those who were satisfied reported only moderate use of the chair outdoors. Limited use related to an infrequent need for outings, outdoor barriers, feelings of insecurity over chair safety and lengthy waiting times for chair delivery and required modifications. Service providers should be aware that older EPIOC users may require extra support and the provision of timely adjustments to increase chair use.
